Trying to maintain a youthful appearance becomes quite difficult when facial wrinkles enter the equation. These creases, folds, or skin ridges will often make you appear a lot older than you are. Expectedly, you will probably want to do everything within your power to sidestep the problem altogether.

Include Antioxidants and Stay Hydrated

According to research published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, systematic antioxidants have been found to help prevent skin damage. Courtesy of their ability to protect against photodamage through intracellular signaling pathways, antioxidants can block or slow down the onset of wrinkles. This has become known as the inside-out approach where nearly every plastic surgeon and industry expert suggests that you begin by altering the internal factors. Since everything you eat and drink will have a direct effect on your skin, you must pick and choose carefully.

Some of the best antioxidants that you should incorporate into your diet are berries, cherries, pecans, black plums, black beans, and fish that carries a lot of omega 3 fatty acids. You also need to ensure that your skin stays hydrated, especially after physical activity. Sweating will leave your skin dry and more susceptible to damage such as cracking. Hence why you should consume enough water throughout the entire day.

Minimize Excessive Sun Exposure

Excessive exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is present in regular sunlight will negatively impact your skin. While the most worrisome concern will be cancers, which include the basal-cell carcinoma, squamous-cell carcinoma, and melanoma, you should also note that UV rays can cause your skin to develop pigment irregularity, broken capillaries, and red blotches. Not to mention sunburns that could leave you suffering through excruciating pain for days. To prevent your elastin fibers from becoming damaged, you should avoid excessive exposure to the sun.

In case you must be outside, you must take some precautionary measures such as wearing protective clothing, using a sunscreen with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF), and trying to stay in shade as much as possible.

Do Not Skip on Your Sleep

There is a reason why someone coined the phrase “beauty sleep” many years ago. Besides helping your organism recover, getting at least eight hours of rest per night will ensure that your skin repairs itself. This means fixing any bruises, cuts, broken capillaries, and other types of damage that can ultimately lead to wrinkles. Also, sleep is arguably the only time of your day when you are going to be unable to make facial expressions that could contribute to the early onset of wrinkles.

One thing that every plastic surgeon reminds, however, is the fact that even sleeping could have a negative impact. Are you prone to “burying” your face into the pillow whenever you go to bed? If so, you are increasing the odds of skin damage due to the repeated pressure that your face has to put up with. Trying to break away from that habit and attempting to spend most of your night sleeping on your back is a great start.

You should also remember that unhealthy habits such as smoking will play an important role. After all, nicotine leads to narrow blood vessels in outer layers of your skin. Consequently, the blood flow becomes impaired, various types of damages present themselves, and your skin’s downfall begins.

Finally, it is imperative that you find an anti-wrinkle or moisturizing creme and make it a habit to apply the product to your face daily. Doing so will help you restore a young facial appearance that is devoid of any wrinkles or signs of skin damage.
